The wall separating Germany
Political Supremacy
It should come as no surprise that those who make decisions in a country are politicians. As little should the surprise be that these people come from across society, they are not a homogeneous Anybody is allowed to become a politician, it does not require any particular skill.
In the meantime, it is said that philosophers make bad politicians. While philosophers have thoughts and ideas, theories and hypotheses, politicians have opinions. This is why anybody can become a politician. All it requires is that you have got opinions. Politics do not require your opinions to be logical, rational or in any other way sane. As long as you’ve got an opinion, in you go.
However charming the idea seem that anybody will make a politician, the idea itself is in fact rather flawed. A state has nothing to gain from a politician whose opinions are based on fairytales and whose proposals seek to ruin everything. One might argue that the effects still may yield positive result, however, that is not the point here.
It is not sane to have people argue for their opinion when their opinion is based on vast misunderstandings and lack of knowledge. This is generally how bad decisions are made, and it should be avoided at all costs.
Yet, when the knowledge politicians obtain is not distributed to the people, lies can continue to be fed to the public to keep the misinformed politicians elected.
Add the possibility of conspiracy theoreticians, and any kind of rubbish can be used to get certain people elected.
As long as political campaigns work in the way of repeating a name and number, with little to no actual arguments for why a certain person should get elected, we can expect this idiocracy to keep getting worse. When people think certain policies are rubbish because somebody has fed them lies or myths about them, voices taking advantage of this are easily heard. What is not heard is usually the explanation of why the policies are sane, or in extreme cases, don’t actually exist. One of these cases is the banana-policy of the European Union. While it is widely claimed to be a “bananas cannot be bent too much”, it is in fact a market regulation which was adopted by the EU simply because it existed in member states from before, and was ballooned by the media to seem exclusive for the EU in order to criticize it. This, amongst other myths and misunderstandings, make up one of the major reasons for people thinking the European Union is garbage, clinging to desperate nationalism so they can get votes for being ‘controversial’, while simultaneously having a fair amount of other, closet-racist opinions silenced in order to gain more votes.
This is why I think the political rule of the dumb and misinformed is not a sustainable way of ruling a state, and it is why critical thinking should be emphasized in schools more than it is today, as well as a relaxation from the passionate opinions politicians have got, preventing them from changing opinion.
In my opinion the greatest characteristic of a politician should be that of changing opinion if disproved; Anybody clinging in vain to their opinion, despite having had all arguments completely obliterated are ignorant and do not deserve to get anywhere near deciding what laws and policies should be present in my life.
So please, quit considering philosophers to be just “wise” and actually make an attempt to learn what the general teachings of philosophy are, not just paste quotes taken from their context because they seem to agree with your opinion, while any of the philosophers would be ashamed of you if they knew the way you treated knowledge, politics and debating.
Politics is not about being right, it is about being wrong, as is any debate. Understood?
